It was quite normal in the 70s and 80s to go to the pub from work at lunchtime, especially on Friday. Then after consuming four or five pints, return to work and drift through the rest of the afternoon before going home. This went on in most workplaces, offices and factories. Such behaviour nowadays would result in instant dismissal.
