Thank you Audrey Kneller (nee Buffman) for your comments about Barnetts and your delicious lunch. Your memory is outstanding remembering that I (your sister, Yvonne) was probably swatting for her GCE exams, which would have been 1958. I left for America in 1964, but have such happy memories of my schooling at Robert Montefiore on Vallance Road near to all the restaurants mentioned in the Gentle Author’s blog.

So many memories. I believe Monnickendams had shops also, as have recollections of my parents mentioning them. Alas all we get now is chain stores with machine made foods!

Ah MONNICKENDAM! That takes me back to my childhood in Stoke Newington before the war. Though just where their shop was has faded from my memory, leaving a trace that places it somewhere on the rise of Stamford Hill, towards the north and, strictly speaking, outside our usual shopping area. The name, though left a memory trace that will remain with me until death!

I lived in Spitalfields from July 1953 to April 1959 and well remember some of the advertisers, especially, Barnetts & Ostwinds from our trips down “The Lane”. We, my mother and I, enjoyed a salf beef sandwich and blackcurrant drink at Barnetts who had a restaurant in Middlesex Street. I don’t know where my sister, Yvonne, was. She must have been swatting for her GCE exams. She attended Robert Montefiore Secondary School in Valance Road. Ostwinds catered my wedding in June 1965 which was held in Golders Green. Happy days!

Very interesting to see ‘C.E.’ used instead of A.D. at this early stage. As a former copy-editor, I remember well the numbers of authors who objected to the replacement in the 1980s!

I really like this. I wish Samuel the mason was still there.. Did you know Churchill, may he rest in peace, took shelter in there for a bit during the siege of Sidney st.?
