The mother of my best friend from senior school originated from Bermondsey, but always seemed rather embarrassed about her origins. I now wish that I’d asked her more about her life there.

There were leather workshops everywhere and you never forget the smell. The whole area was fragrant whatever the wind direction with the Courage Brewery, Sarsons vinegar factory, and the more distant Peak Freens biscuit factory.
