Hello,
I am researching details of my late father-in law, artist George Bass, who painted the murals of the "Cries of London"for the Samuel Whitbread Leicester Square pub in the 1950's. I noticed that you have an interest in these art works. I am currently writing an article for a Sunday newspaper about my father-in law and his involvement in the art work for the Samuel Whitbread. I've attempted to find out if the "Cries of London" still exist in the Pizza Hut basement in Leicester Square as it was the basement bar of the Samuel Whitbread in 1958. George was commissioned to paint these murals for the bar and I have 5"x4" transparancies of the artwork before he sent it to Whitbreads for putting in the bar. They are perfect and show the true quality of his interpretation of the commission from Whitbreads. I can send you a low res picture of one of them( not for publication). These are in colour. I also have a b/w photo of him painting one of the murals in his studio. If you have any info which may further my research for the newspaper article I would be grateful...in the meantime, once the article is published and a fee delivered from the paper, I will send you all I have for your records ( not for publication).
Hope that is of interest.
Best wishes, Peter Eveson

I particularly love today's blog. The very phrase 'Cries of London' conjures up all sorts of images for me. Do any of your Gentle Readers remember the paintings/prints of some of the London Cries on the walls of the Samuel Whitbread pub in Leicester Square? I have looked and looked but cannot find any reference to these wonderful images. I am talking about the late 1960s, and hope that someone else remembers them. How I wish I could attend your lecture.
