It still rankles that the City took away the Billingsgate Porters' badges as part of a move to "modernise" Billingsgate by shifting the porters’ contracts from collective to individual, shoving them out of a proud tradition of work that had existed for centuries. "Modernise" of course has meant removing any obstacles to finance capital, to the soulless redevelopment of Canary Wharf, etc., in tandem with the marginalisation of skilled labour trades. Billy Hallet, you are right: "Our traditions are disappearing."

My Sunday morning was enriched by these photos, and the tales of the fishermen........past,
present and future. Seemingly, these interesting folks have relocated to another site (making NEW memories, no doubt) but I'm so grateful to see their return journey to the Church, complete with specialized head gear, a king's ransom of seafood, and bouquets of parsley.

The Harvest Festival of the Sea has become the Boundless Festival of Stories and Lore.
Hurrah!
