My Dad emigrated to Australia in the early 50’s after having been brought up in Spitalfields. He often spoke to me about he and his friends pretending to be Jewish (that’s not the contemporaneously unacceptable word he used) when his friends were being picked on, creating safety in numbers. I recently did the Gentle Authors tour of Spitalfeilds which was extraordinary and spent that evening in tears.

I read about Harry’s death in the Daily Mail on Wednesday. How I loved hm as the awful Mr Morris in Friday Night Dinner. If I wasn’t laughing my chin was on the floor at some crass statement he had come out with - his comic timing and delivery were fabulous. I also enjoyed many of his films and his story on Spitalfields Life.

We have lost someone of great talent, RIP Harry.

First met HARRY when I was his understudy in The Amorous Prawn
with the wonderful Evelyn Laye in the West End. Then I was his partner pastry cook
in Weskers The Kitchen at the Royal Court. An astounding production by John Dexter. He
was one of the funniest guys I had ever known with a mind as sharp as a razor. He was a fabulous actor even if he played the same role all his life.

Played all his roles with authenticity and could make you laugh . A true East Ender . I used to see Harry occasionally when there was an attempt to revive the Unity Theatre in the 90’s . The Theatre in Goldington Crescent had burnt down and there was a trust fund that held the insurance payout. I believe Harry was one of the trustees . I was on one of the committees that tried to find a suitable site .It was a noble effort to bring back the Unity but alas the funds available were not enough to support it’s resurrection as a theatre. It was a great shame as I recall seeing some wonderful productions in Goldimgton Crescent with my father when The Unity Theatre stood there in the 1970’s
