I have a small shadow box (4 compartments) with Caslon Fleet St London imprinted on the top. I have 2 Wade whimsie homes and a Moonpenny Pottery house (made in Tasmania, Australia) and in the other compartment typefaces spelling ‘home’.

What a shame that he didn’t team up with John Baskerville in Birmingham. He did his first typeface 1750’s! Cradley is only 8 miles from Birmingham and I would have thought as he worked in The Minories he would be aware of Baskerville?

Although I was quite an adventurous and active teenager and Old St was in. my area of action, I am sad to say that I never discovered Caslon or his tomb. Might the discovery have contributed to the direction of my development? Would I have discovered the typefaces and become interested in printing? Alas one can never know! Thank you, GA, for yet another sidelight on my (almost forgotten) youth!

A wonderful story that hardly anyone is aware of today. Letters were once hand-carved. Today, the typeface of an entire text is changed by pressing a key.

Another excellent article, thank you. It also disclosed something I wasn’t aware of on the ‘Dedication page of William Caslon’s Specimen’ that King George III was regarded as ‘The King of France’ until he relinquished the ‘title’ circa 1802. It turns out, on further investigation, that all ‘English’ monarchs since King Edward III were regaled, ideologically as the Monarch of France even though, post late medieval times, they had very little to with the country.
