Great photos on this site. Only went hopping once as a child, but still remember it.
This photo no 46 is titled the Day family but the two older people in front and centre are not part of the Day family. They were their neighbours though.
Their names are George James Pye and Matilda Maria Pye. I know this as they were my grandparents. Depending on when the photo was taken, the baby could be my eldest brother, although not sure about that , it might be a girl and part of the Day family.
Kind regards

What wonderful pictures of the Hop Pickers you've been posting recently. I went to senior school on the edge of Surrey, but girls from gypsy families I was at school with never appeared at the beginning of each autumn term as they'd all gone hop picking in Kent with their families. I was quite envious of them all! My brother used to take me to Harrison's Rock for climbing in the late 50s and early 60s, and we'd get the train to either Eridge or Groombridge, and then walk across the hop fields up to the Rocks. The picture above have triggered all sorts of old memories for me.

I’ll bet it was hard work, but everyone in these photos looks like they’re having a jolly time amongst family and friends.
In my part of Scotland people used to go raspberry picking at Blairgowrie in Perthshire. It was known as “going to the berries”.

What a great set of photos. Must have been hard work but they all look like they are enjoying a break from the streets of London. Wonder when the last “hopping” year was?
