You are not the first boxer that I have learned got a start in order to survive schoolyard bullies. A friend said that, when he learned to punch back, the bullies left him alone.

I am of a similar age to Sylvester and I too lived in straitened circumstances, with little support from elders, working and living in Hackney and Shoreditch. Tough times I will never forget. You learn to survive, or you go under, fast. Sink or swim, and London is a place with no sympathy to the struggler.
