Been eating there since about 1966 and still get there about four times a year. Known as “head office” to many in the City as many years ago it used to have a “branch office” in Cullum Street, EC3. It’s hardly changed since my early days there, just the introduction of tablecloths! I commend the egg curry to you!

I was introduced to this restaurant in 1969. The food then met the standard which hasn’t been surpassed yet.

So glad that many years ago I was posted to work at the now long gone itinerant DHSS office on Mark St. I’d been sent to a ‘Fraud Officer’ role there as a punishment for having been charged with possession of a very small quantity of hashishm and sure enough as was probably hoped handed in my notice on my first day. So the job lasted 4 weeks whereas my fondness of this restaurant has lasted 45 years and counting!
It was the Halal Restaurant’s wonderful aroma that broke the monotony of the unwanted job and called me to discover it. My first dinnertime order was the delicious Mutton Vindaloo with the fragrant colourful Pilau Rice. I’d never tasted anything like this before, it opened up my mind to a new world of culinary possibility.
The restaurant then was very basic with benches and no tablecloths, more a café than restaurant.
After finishing the job l started eating there regularly with friends. When I stopped eating meat I switched to the Halal’s wonderful Soya Meat Vindaloo (sadly long dicontinued) and also an Egg Curry, both of which found favour with me. I became a regular for many years as I became a Dad and as my daughters grew.
Now they are adults and I still meet then there. The restaurant is much smarter now than it used to be but it is still unpretentious, the service friendly, the food tasty yet affordable.
I hope that despite the encroachment of tall office blocks into the previously residential area the restaurant and its staff have many more successful years ahead of it,

I used to eat there four decades ago. Everything looks the same except for the prices! Fond memories. I think I remember they even used to accept Luncheon Vouchers!
