I very much hope the more sympathetic proposal by the Georgian Group succeeds for the Custom House. I've taken many photos of this beautiful building from across the River, and would love to see it brought back to life, and for others to know it in the future.

GA, thank you for this, and please pass on my appreciation to Sir Charles for his eloquent objection to the Cannon group's proposal. There are sufficient luxury hotels in London to serve those who can afford them for a hundred years to come. The Custom House was built with taxes, money raised from working people, and should be made available to the public as a space for events and other public purposes. Access to the waterfront, to a park around the building, and to the Great Hall should not be denied.

Like Milo, I despair of London’s officials ever realising the full extent of their destruction of historic structures, and likewise the shutting off from the general public the most important parts of the city — and the City — to its general public. Some of us write and write, but it seems we are not acknowledged, in the overwhelming power of big bucks.

This argument is eloquent, logical, and persuasive. But it is enough?

Let's hope the Customs House can be saved. We need no more office buildings or fancy hotels in this world that has forever changed.

Thank you for sharing.

I well thought out and intelligent approach to this argument. I do hope the enquiry accepts the Georgian Society's proposal. Is there anyway the general public can add their voice? Is there a petition, a letter-adding or a body we can join to help support the Georgian Society? If there is any way, please let me know as I'd like to back this important proposal. Not just as an ex-Londoner, but as a member of society sick and tired of the desecration of our past by corporate raiders.

Thanks for publishing this clear and convincing argument, I'd not have seen it otherwise. Our record in saving the architectural heritage around the City and the East End s not great but we have had several heartening successes so I'm still hopeful that we'll not lose yet another grand space to a flash, overpriced hotel built solely as a Profit Centre for some distant bunch of moneybags.

Thank you, Sir Charles, for this persuasive argument, and to you, G.A., for sharing it with the Spitalfields Life community. I know it speaks for many of us, and in far more eloquent language than I would be capable of assembling. I, personally, am grateful to you for speaking on my behalf.

A considered and insightful contribution. Let's hope the enquiry accepts the Georgian Society's proposal which is clearly the better outcome.
