My husband’s Aunty Doris (Peach) lived. In Black Lion Yard – Above a Sweet meats shop ! 1st floor flat – and opposite she told us was the last cowkeepers -I remember large wooden doors (I think they were) – I had 1st night of my honeymoon with her – January 1965 ! Know she moved circa 1967/8 ? into a modern block of flats – trying hard to remember – just fascinating – she knew of the Krays who lived close by – just a memory – I do Geneology too so never know if someones memory can confirm – enjoyed relating this info – Thankyou.

Such attention to detail. A number one story. The entrance to
Black Lion Yard also holds positive significance as well as very nervous memories.

There used to be a newsagent near its entrance amd there my Auntie Rae, a true gitte neshema, a good soul, my Mum’s sister, bought “Loving” magazine, which featured my first poem on love.

Avram Stencl, was a true dedicated Yiddish poet. He sold his Yiddish newspaper outside the Grand Palais.

A wonderful and inspiring story. I’m so glad Esther, Stan and Perec found safe harbour here and had the support of kind neighbours and were able to build a family and a good life after all that had been taken from them.

Vivid memories of all EastEnd locations mentioned, especially the hustle and bustle of Black Lion Yard on a Sunday morning . As Lorna says, it was the place my family found sanctuary.

Fantastic story, and yet another example of how the East End has provided sanctuary for so many people throughout history.

And what a stunning photo of Lorna as a little girl – it reminded me of pictures of the Queen Mother at the same age.

Whenever I attended (very rare) family gatherings, the name of Fishberg came up; but I can’t remember the context. I think it may have in terms of marriages, relationships et al. Memories of the area very well told.
