I worked at Gee’s as a representative many years ago,enjoyed my time,it’s good that they are still in business,most manufacturers have gone as they source their goods from abroad.
It’s sad that the U.K do not make clothes etc.,these days.In the late 60’s the Americans and Japanese all wanted the Made In England label,but unfortunately those days have gone.Today
you wouldn’t get youngsters on sewing machines,they all want to be on computers.One good thing knitting is taking off.

I have been making shirts, jeans, curtains and the like since the seventies and live in fear that William Gee might closes down but reading your article I much reassured that it is still flourishing!
I do remember long queues pre online orders. I remember the lovely young lady who has worked there for ages and now has a family.
What a joy and a saving to have such a haberdashers locally.

Haberdashery. What a wonderful word! I always wanted a shop selling dress and other materials, but reckon I’d have been happy with a haberdashery too

This shop sounds like heaven to me…..wish that I’d known about it when I was living and sewing in the early 90s!

Oh, what a wonderful place. So many specialty and one-owner shops are disappearing, it’s our duty to patronise and protect such institutions. (By the way, Andy, as someone who grew up in New York City, that’s “schmatte”.)

Gee’s is such a wonderful place, I have walked past so many times, they have some great old fashioned items in their window space!
I went into the shop once and spoke to the assistant about my late mother who, as a teenager, had worked in a small haberdashery shop in Birmingham. She would have so loved the place.
