GA, what a fun list of beer terminology. It reminded me of the many vocabulary lists (followed by quizzes, of course) that I made for my students.
Is it not the worst?
When you get a thirst
And the only thing you can think
Is I “feel like a drink”
I could do with a beer
If only the pubs were here
However did they disappear?

The sizes of the barrels was a nice reminder - I had become a bit hazy about these delightfully non-metric quantities. As a young boy I used to watch my uncle manoeuvre barrels (22 gallons) in his pub cellar - not easy. In Manchester the Holt's Brewery delivered its bitter in hogsheads (54 gallons) and that was a serious business in dropping one of those from the dray to the cellar. But a butt? Did breweries ever deliver those? By my reckoning that's half a ton of beer!

But there were bigger barrels. In former times there were huge barrels that beer was matured in for months on end. One was big enough to christen it with an inaugural banquet held inside the barrel for a large number of people. In 1814 one of those barrels burst destroying a large area and killing eight people. Needless to say those barrels weren't used for deliveries!
