Interesting, about being “brought up to go and work when you were fourteen.”
In 1927, at 14, my father ran away from home (Utica, New York) and joined the Army, which still amazes me. Different times then.

I too come from East London albeit 30 years later than Doris and I remember my friend saying we must pronounce ‘th’ instead of ‘f’’. Though I don’t remember any of my family and friends sounding too ‘cor blimey’.
RIP Doris, she had a good life and there’s nothing wrong in bettering yourself.
