I first visited Atlantis at the age of 17 whilst returning back to Yorkshire from the 1969 Isle Of Wight Festival.

I think that I was made aware of the emporium through the pages of International Times (IT) or OZ.

I purchased a Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot and the companion book The Pictorial Key To The Tarot by A.E.Waite.

I have returned once or twice since then but the magical thrill of that first visit remains with me to this day.

I have been visiting this bookshop for nearly forty years and am always amazed at how timeless and yet how timely the place is. I cannot imagine being in London and not dropping by. It is so much a part of the London fabric and worth visiting just to absorb a little of that magic. Long may it reign!

Thank you for this most interesting story. As it happens I have distant memories from at a place where I once worked. The names and places shall remain anonymous however the story must be told. There was a work colleague who claimed to be a witch . I must say that to me personally she was a most pleasant and friendly colleague always greeting me in the tea room and in passing by in the corridors when our paths crossed. There were rumours of an argument between a manager and the lady witch and of a spell cast on the manager . It came to pass very shortly afterwards that the manager abruptly lost his job . I can say no more .

Very interesting.
I contacted a witch a few years ago, concerning a restless suicide in our house, just a bit noisy sometimes, and she offered to cleanse the place remotely...,., and for 50 quid!!
I declined and he's still with us, although to a much lesser extent as I asked him to sod off and follow the light. Lots of witches in Suffolk.

Lovely article. Yes, I must confess, I also have a certain shyness about the subject. On the other hand, I had once met a woman who called herself a witch (as a job title!). And it remains to state: there are many things between heaven and earth that are exciting. In the well-stocked bookstore I would certainly find interesting things...

Marvellous, GA. I used to shop here. My copy of William James's 'The Varieties of Religious Experience ' and Madame Bavlatsky's The Secret Doctrine', came from here:-). There are few finer descriptions of the beginnings of the universe than in the 'Stanzas of Dzyan'

The Stanzas of Dzyan
The Eternal Parent [the great Matrix], wrapped in her ever-invisible Robes, had slumbered once again for seven eternities.

Time was not, for it lay asleep in the infinite bosom of duration.

Universal Mind was not, for there were no Ah-Hi [the serpents of limitation] to contain it.

The seven ways to bliss were not. The great causes of misery were not, for there was no one to produce or get ensnared in them.

Darkness alone filled the boundless all, for Father, Mother and Son were once more one, and the Son had not yet awakened for the new wheel and his pilgrimage theron.

The seven sublime Lords [levels of consciousness] and the seven Truths [the structure of the universe] had ceased to be, and the universe, the son of Necessity, was immersed in Paranish-panna [the highest truth], to be outbreathed by that which is and yet is not. Naught was.

The causes of existence had been done away with, and the invisible that was, and the invisible that is rested in eternal non-being - the one being.

Alone, the one form of existence stretched boundless, infinite, causeless in a dreamless sleep; and life pulsated unconscious in universal space, throughout that All-Presence which is sensed by the opened eye of Dangma [the perfected seer].

But where was the Dangma when the Alaya [the eternal parent - the matrix] of the Universe was in Paramartha [state of supreme reality] and the great wheel was Anupagaka [without parents]?
