My sincere thanks to Aubrey for revealing his tough years, but warming to know as he says "I have progressed over the years and I feel very lucky indeed".
I wanted to give that young Aubrey a big hug. A tough growing up, but these wonderful photos show joy and friendship too. Stay well Aubrey. The world's a better place for you being in it.

I so enjoyed this very personal, revealing post, and the images. I am so grateful that the bricks, the photos of the boys, and the story teller/s have endured. I occasionally think about a quote that affirms the importance of stories, and how "sometimes a man needs a story more than a meal".....Thank you, GA, for always providing the nourishment of these unique life stories.
Stay safe, all.

What a beautiful story that goes back to the depths of childhood experiences. The mark on the brick wall from 1950 is of course a tremendously exciting thing.

I actually found the spot on Street View, corner of Navarre St/Boundary St — not enough resolution to find the markings, though. All the best to Mr Aubrey Silkoff!

I do understand Aubrey's sentiment of life.
This is a written piece that I really do feel I connect with.
Those kids would have got a clip round the ear from the local bobby if he had found them carving their names like that, not knowing that actually they were creating a real tangible piece of history.
Good luck to you Aubrey.
