Thank you for this very evocative post. I love finding out more about Wellclose Square, especially as I know live close by.
St Peter's school is actually called St Paul's Primary with the golden ship as its logo.

A very moving and poignant write up, although I'd never before made the connection between the spelling of “deptors” to that of “Deptford”. As you say, a particularly plangent detail.
I'd always thought of graffiti as 'vandalism' - until that is I was invited to attend a conference at Winchester University 3 yrs ago, of which it's sole purpose was 'Graffiti'. As a research volunteer with English Heritage, I'd been working on a graffiti project at Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire, marking the centenary of WWI where the cell block walls at the Castle are covered in graffiti written by Conscientious Objectors during WWI and beyond. A fascinating project!

Dear GA, thank you for being willing to share the distressing details of your own brush with poverty, to make us stop and think more carefully about the people who made these graffiti. You present a humbling lesson to us all about the obligation to recognize our interdependence, our common humanity, and to help each other in times of need.

A poignant piece GA. They all existed once as we do now. But our footprint is less permanent. Who will remember our marks as they evaporate in our internet world? I had no idea they had such private prisons in days gone by. Thank you.
