Suresh tells such lovely stories and I love his tank top.

A lot of my childhood in Scotland was spent in the local public library. It was a listed building, all floor to ceiling oak shelves and beautiful inside. I remember the excitement of climbing the stairs up to the libraries and the majestic reading room with its big oak tables and chairs. Imagine my horror on returning from 20 years in London to find the council had ripped out all the oak in favour of white flat pack particleboard, sacrilege. Sadly it has now been sold on and redeveloped into luxury flats.

People in Britain are so lucky to have free membership of public libraries because here in Switzerland they are run by charitable foundations and you have to pay an annual fee to join.

All hail the library. Such a shame, so many have closed. A very evocative piece all round. I would love to meet and chat with Suresh but I live too far away to come to his event.

Ah Itchy Park!

That name lies somewhere in my childhood memories! Where it belongs I know not. But my parents' generation all lived in and around Spitalfields. Sadly they taught me little about it, but Suresh is a good guide.

I can recommend the book, I bought it a few months ago - he is such an interesting character, love all the stories of him and his family - great people.
Although I didn't live in London then, I remember going into the old Library on a visit to a friend. I can still remember well how it used to be inside.

Good to read Suresh's memories and recollections of the Spitalfields he grew up in.
Sad to know the Truman Brewery holds unpleasant memories for him, but lovely to hear about the pleasure and solace he found in the Whitechapel Library and Hanbury Hall.
Thank you for sharing this stroll with us all.
