I like to imagine this refers to my great great grandfather as the master – “and a Whitechapel dandy was joking with the smart barmaid – whose master stood at the door of his private parlour and smoked his cigar with the air of a lord.”
He was the owner of the Blue Anchor Inn in Whitechapel Road at that time, a bit of a rogue who has climbed from poverty, made numerous appearances at the Old Bailey, but who clearly had delusions of grandeur.

In the lower left corner of the frontispiece is a gentleman having his shoes shined who looks very like Mr Pickwick!
