I was very interested by Marie’s story because many years ago I read a book called “No Time To Say Goodbye”. It was the personal accounts of people who had been evacuees as children during WW2, Sir Michael Caine contributed the experiences he had with his brother (not good, as the lady they were with beat then and shut them in a cupboard - his mother took them back to London when she found out).

Marie’s story mirrors many of the others, and many had experiences of being taken in by very kind people they kept in contact with as adults.

My father in law who is 87 now was evacuated from the coast of Kent with his brother. They were sent to Suffolk but were returned to Kent for getting up to all sorts of boyhood mischief!

Yet another riveting memoir, which I personally find an extra bit engrossing since I've read Far From the East End by Iris Jones Simantel, who during WWII was an evacuee in Wales. Mrs. Iles's memoir gives me a totally different perspective on what this - in itself laudable, of course - scheme could lead to, and I greatly admire the decisive actions taken by Mrs. Iles's at such a tender age.

As per usual, Spitalfields Life continues to be a source of fascinating, interesting, and informative stories from real life.
