What a great collection. Thana now called Thane was a part of Bombay. Cambay is also in India, famous for cloth and agate. It’s now Khambatt in Gujarat.

In Japan in the 1950s matchboxes had miniatures of blockprints on the covers. My mum collected them – also cut off from the boxes. They are really marvelous. Far more attractive than any match boxes I have seen since.

GA, what an interesting collection. Clive mentioned the kindness of his friend Spring-Rice’s mother who sent him matchbook covers from New York. That name rings a bell in American history. Sir Cecil Arthur Spring-Rice (1859-1918), of Anglo-Irish ancestry, served as ambassador to the US from 1912-1918 and was a close personal friend of President Theodore Roosevelt. This thoughtful woman may have been one of his descendants.

What a great collection, and International too! I knew someone many years ago from Mitcham in Surrey who saved matchboxes. His were of the complete box though, though don’t recall he had any international ones.

That’s called pop art. In the enlarged reproduction of the matchbox labels, their quality can be seen even better.

I still have the boxes of SCOTTISH BLUEBELL MATCHES and ENGLAND’S GLORY, brought back from Britain, on my bookshelf because I find them so beautiful.

Clive Murphy was truly an artistic aesthete!
