I used to go to a mates in Hackney most weekends to watch the footy on Sky, he was Jewish and always insisted I stopped at Roggs and picked up a feed. My first time in there I went mad, bought WAY to much food - Barry just kept tempting me! He's say "Anything else?"... with a wry grin and a raised eyebrow, the answer was almost always 'yes', smoked salmon and cream cheese onion Pletzl and a few extra pickles ... brilliant place, sorely missed.

I spent my formative years in the neighbourhood from 1977 to 1998. Roggs Deli holds a special place in my memories. Though not the most visually striking shop, it served as a hub where the locals congregated for a quick chat whilst picking up some Pickles and Goujons, nestled on the corner of Canon Street Road. This has brought so much fond memories, Thank you Spitafields Life.

Between about 1978 and 1986/7 I had a workshop out the back directly opposite to Roggs - so got to know him quite well. I wasn’t into pickles etc but know his stuff was highly regarded as people came from miles around to buy stuff from him. You would regularly see Rolls Royce’s parked up on the pavement further down Cannon Street Road on a Sunday as his specialist customers would come and buy.

I did buy cheeses from there and maybe other things - which were excellent. That sort of food was not to my taste but that did not alter my respect for Barry or his customers. Many fascinating conversations would be held in there. The most memorable things for me were the vacuum formed picture of a girl on a beach where here body was sculpted in the plastic with all the right bits sticking out - which used to hang on the wall behind the counter near the door to his back room. The strongest memory of all was Rogg and his dog - a bull dog of some age who waddled along around the shop. It had had a stroke so used to sit mainly. It was so addled that when it wanted to pee it didn’t lift its leg and pee on the street side wall in Burslem Street - it used to lean against the wall to prop itself up and pee on the pavement.

The dog and Barry were a real sight together. They stand side by side - the dog sitting of course - and they both had bulging white bellies - the dogs white belly covered in freckles and Barry’s white T-shirt covering his belly covered in marks from serving behind the counter. They went together like a horse and carriage.

Every Wednesday afternoon possible my father made a beeline for Barry Rogg! So even in Croydon with its handful of fellow Jews we had the thinnest sliced smoked salmon, herring, pickles, chopped liver, all sorts of fattening food that was simply delicious. Barry speaks about The Lane nearby - what noise, rude and warm! What bargains! He must have been so young in the 1950's but he seemed so old to me...
