I would highly recommend this book, fascinating and shocking at the same time.
So well researched by Julian Woodford and I am so pleased I purchased it some time ago.

It is interesting that that pistol still exists. It would be great if they could loan it to a museum so that it is properly curated. What often happens is that when the owners pass away, the next generation is less sure that the story is true, and gradually the story fades until someone says it can't be true, and then the story is lost. (Any museum would do. Sooner the better.)

A gripping book I cannot recommend highly enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed (and shuddered) following the growing criminal career of this frightening man who comes to life on the page.

Very well researched, and I appreciate the time it took to discover the revelations that make this biography so engrossing. My one wish? That an actual period depiction of Mr. Merceron had survived. I truly wanted to look into that face!

Like all the Spitalfields Life Books, this volume is beautifully designed.

Currently reading The Boss of Bethnal Green, I find it extremely engaging and very well written, as well as beautifully researched. Unfortunately such venal characters still exist. One, in particular, springs to mind!

This book is an absolute must read for anyone interested in the history of London and particularly the East End. It is a fascinating and horrifying story of such a corrupt politician that it makes the modern day equivalents seem like angels in comparison!

Highly recommended - and yet another beautifully produced book.

Julian Woodford's Merceron book is wonderful - a hugely researched, gripping story that should be read by everyone interested in the evolution of Spitalfields and the East End. How I would have liked to have it to hand when I was first wandering round the area many decades ago, when very few people were interested in it.
