It would be great if they could loan it to a museum so that it is properly curated. What often happens is that when the owners pass away, the next generation is less sure that the story is true, and gradually the story fades until someone says it can’t be true, and then the story is lost. (Any museum would do. Sooner the better.)

I thoroughly enjoyed (and shuddered) following the growing criminal career of this frightening man who comes to life on the page.

Very well researched, and I appreciate the time it took to discover the revelations that make this biography so engrossing. My one wish? That an actual period depiction of Mr. Merceron had survived. I truly wanted to look into that face!

Like all the Spitalfields Life Books, this volume is beautifully designed.

Unfortunately such venal characters still exist. One, in particular, springs to mind!

It is a fascinating and horrifying story of such a corrupt politician that it makes the modern day equivalents seem like angels in comparison!
