2025 and the pub is still shut! Smh. This pub should be listed and reopened for its intended purpose. Any development taking place should be about giving this public house space to operate. Another office building in its place would be a disservice to the people working, living and visiting Aldgate.

I travelled up from Wiltshire to visit Still and Star some years ago, after doing some family history research.
Discovered that my great, great, great grandparents, Arthur and Jane Granger had run the pub from 1843 (possibly earlier) until 1853.
Had a chat with the guy running it when I visited and he took me to his office to show me a wooden plaque listing the landlords back to 1820 (Arthur and Jane were second on the list).
Wonder what happened to the plaque, probably ended up in a skip.
Sad to hear about the loss of this bit of London history, just glad I got the chance to visit when I did.
From the fancy brochure of the proposed new build, it looks like the pub name might survive for a while longer anyway.

Ah, this is a shame to read. I used to work in Aldgate. Granted I didn’t drink here much – but when I did, I remember it being a proper East End boozer. And at lunch time it served homemade sandwiches.

So very said as a previous comment said they won’t be happy until every inch of the old East End has gone, and that will be a very sad day. I was waiting for a bus and saw it down the end of an alley so i took a photo of a very sad old forgotton pub, sounds like just in time.I still try and take as many photos of the old East End when ever I’m around that way I have so many memories of East London that I don’t want to forget and that way it’s a good reminder.

I love to see these old photos of a bygone London as a twenty year old I was a brewers drayman for Charrington and delivered there many times , for a small pub it got through quite a lot of beer. Unfortunately as it was always a early delivery and we were blocking the road I never got to go inside for a drink.

I went and had a look today as was passing on way to the tube stop – it had caught my eye 3 days earlier. Was hoping it was still open [I’m not local] but sadly not. It did look like there was building activity nearby. Shame!

Interesting that going on for three years now since the decision to close it was made that it is still standing proud. Just walked passed and took a snap. Is the office block development still going ahead or is it wishful thinking on my part that the developers have changed their plans?

Money and corruption talks louder than saving the history of any village,town or city. The new office block is a monstrosity, go pull some hiddieous 1960’s, 70’s or 80’s building instead!

When will the puppet planners learn, we cannot allow such architectural and historic vandalism to continue, we need our historic buildings saving for future generations and not simply demolished for profit
