Thank you, GA for telling this delicious story! For me It has some reminders of my father's history, When he was released from the army in 1946 he bought a small sweetshop with the demob money also in the Peckham market. He had it until 1951 when he sold it to Rossis the ice cream makers. As sweets and chocolates were rationed then, it made the confectionary trade very difficult, unless you dealt in the black market. Being a soldier of the old school he would not deal with anyone unless they had the bona fide ration coupons. Rossis took it over and it became an ice cream shop in the heart of the market. He then worked in international telegraphy, a skill that he learned in the army, for the rest of his life. Something that he enjoyed and was very suited for. He learned the morse code at the age of 9 as a member of the Jewish Lads Brigade in Whitechapel. He was so quick and accurate at transposing it into good English that the army quickly recognised his ability and was posted to SHAEF in Europe just before the D day landings from being an infantryman in the Dorsetshire regiment .
