These are incredible drawings and the skill with which he can evoke different atmospheres, tones, textures, drama and lighting effects by just using cross hatched lines is fantastic.

The Victorians also seem to have an obsession with highly toned and muscled men's legs which always amuses me.

Your knowledge of London clearly knows no bounds. When I was a student there I

used to buy George Cruickshank Caricatures for 1/3d black and white and 2/6 coloured.

They were so out of fashion no one wanted them.. They were copper plate Etchings and

some were hand coloured.

I believe a Cholmondeley sat at King Arthurs Table!

I was not unfamiliar with George Cruikshanks' illustrations for 'The Tower of London,' but thanks to your article I have really enjoyed them for the first time.

Edward Gorey was the first illustrator whose work captured my attention, when I was ten or twelve. I had not seen the similarities in his style to Cruikshanks' until you brought my attention to it. Had I seen it out of context, I might have thought 'The Fall of Nightgall' was one of Gorey's illustrations, not Cruikshanks'!

I particularly love Cruikshanks' masterful way of capturing the play of light and shadow.

Fantastic!

THIS is an impressive body of work -- in my view, it is far more than just a series of illustrations. It is a magnum opus by Cruikshank. He's tackled crowd scenes, night time views, character depictions, architecture, animals -- using an exhaustive vocabulary of mark-making to describe
his subjects. For those who suggest that "illustrators" are not "artists"...….. sputter, sputter...…
consider this amazing series. Dramatic, poignant, theatrical, descriptive, skillful.
Dare I say: epic!

What a gift, on a beautiful Friday morning in the Hudson River Valley.
Stay safe, GA --- and all the readers.

Hopefully before am too ancient to travel will one day be able to get to the Bishopsgate Institute.

I’m glad I’m reading this first thing in the morning and not late at night: the sinister figure behind the pillar on Jane’s first night in the tower makes my hair stand on end.
