I was fortunate enough to find a tower booklet about the graffiti online some years back.Intriguing as it is for someone so distant ,it doesn't put a dent in the full catalog of etchings within the walls of this ancient place. Someday...someday maybe I will gather up the nerve to face my stark raving fear of flying and come to London to see this amazing place.
My first trip to the Tower was on a cold, crisp December day with the sun shining and few other tourists. I was stuck then and now by how much history is found in one place. This post reminded me of how much of history relates to conflicts about religion and how the implications of Henry VIII's actions rippled throughout British history for so many generations.
I would love to know more about William Rame, how he came to be in the Tower and what formed the thoughts expressed in his carving.
Wish I could find comfort as I watch liberal democracies crumble. I thought we had learned something. This is a sad day for Britain and for America. We should be better than this current state of our affairs.

Totally fascinating, thank you GA. As many of these stories ended very badly , it is nice to know that Giovanni Battista Castiglione was well rewarded for his loyalty by Elizabeth and was her Groom of the Privy Chamber for decades, married and lived until 1598.

He apparently carried her letters when she was imprisoned at the Tower. It is good to think that his dedication and devotion gained her longstanding trust and the heart with the E was justified.

Once again, you've illuminated something rare and strange for your readers. The solemnity of
these markings -- and their distinct beauty -- inspired me today. These should be included in any volume about the history of "mark-making": Maybe a future volume for your publishing efforts?
Thanks for always shining a light, GA.
