Were the Spiegelhalter's Jewish? You do not say. I recall Prof. Bill Fishman telling me on his tour of the Jewish East End - which I inherited and carried on for a few years - that they were !! I can find no proof though and maybe somebody can confirm. Leo died in the Army in WW1 .

What a shame that the old Speigalhalters shopfront has gone - it looked like a classic bit of Art Nouveau design, and so much more characterful than what has replaced it...

As usual it gets me into ranty 'grrrrrrrr' mode!

Good luck with the crowd funding.

I suppose it's better to leave these ghosts behind than obliterate the past completely but that begs the questions: Why knock them down at all? Why not renovate or remodel the inside? But the greed goes on. I am not against innovative modern building but so much more renovation is needed. London is renown for the eclectic mix of architecture; so sad if this becomes nothing more than a set of surfaces on period buildings. Especially, when you look up and see the modern building peeping out behind.

Recently I came across a letter that I sent to English Heritage in 2008 , requesting that they consider listing this building .
They used this quote as a reason not to list the building from Pevsner, taken completely out of context before pevsner qouted Ian Nairn.
English Heritage said in their reply letter that the reason they decided not to list this building was
According to Pevsner “it’s pompous aping of West End fashion is comically deflated by the intrusion of a C19 three storey terraced house, which cuts the design in half.
In 2008 the facade was completely intact .
They refused my request for listing .
