I have recently read the new book MUDLARKING by Lara Maiklem which is very interesting and enjoyable, and shows how addictive the mudlarking habit can become. It also paints a very good picture of the different regions of the Thames, and what you are most likely to find there, and the possible back stories of the found objects.

However I was disappointed that there were no photos of her finds, or of the river landscapes
(I would love to know what the remains of the petrified forest at Erith looks like for example)

And so I was pleased to see that you have included photos with this blog. The detritus one is particularly intriguing... it makes one itch to get down to the shore with the Mud God and start digging!

Mudlarking On The Thames - what a novel tourist jaunt together with a ‘catch and release’ program so that finds are not removed from London. I would love to go mudlarking providing there are shower facilities at the end!

This is a perfect example of something I discovered, via Spitalfields Life. I had NEVER heard the term "mudlarking" -- but as an artist who appreciates
"found objects" this whole topic totally rocked my world. I found a fantastic book, "London in Fragments" by Ted Sandling, and greatly appreciate the extra TLC involved in this book. The cover opens up to reveal a mudlarking map, the book is full of photos of the author's treasures as well as stories about "the ones that got away". I so enjoy this author's writing style -- a casual "let's meet for coffee and I'll tell you what I'm up to" breeziness, conveying his love of this unique and
fascinating endeavor. I was thrilled to see the reprise of this blog-post, and discover even more about mud-larking with these atmospheric photos. All hail, the Gods of Mud!

I've never forgotten this story.
And I still wish I could walk the banks with a mudlark.

I wonder if people dig like this along other UK rivers alongside which the Romans lived?

What treasures! Thanks for selecting this story for us to see again.
