It is indeed a great pleasure to acquaint oneself with the convoluted and verbose descriptions of the myriad and diverse businesses which are celebrated in the above representations of great Victorian commercial enterprises, and to appreciate the decorative, embellished and ornamental industrial architecture which housed their various premises.

One is also caused to wonder whose were the artistic hands who drew the wonderfully detailed illustrations which are so much more evocative of that long gone and much mourned period of great architectural diversity than any mere photographs could ever be.

I consumed large quantities of Allen and Hanburys Blackcurrant and Glycerine pastilles as a child. I loved the design of the tins but frequently cut my fingers on them. As I recall, they later started producing them with rolled edges!

Greetings from Boston,

GA, such an impressive array of enterprises in the late Victorian period. Each is shown to best advantage, of course, with nothing said about any environmental damage these trades might incur, particularly the “pharmaceutical chemist” and the “hides, skins, leather” firm in Bermondsey.

I also had to look up “comestible” (foods) and “perruquier” (basically a creator/stylist of wigs).

Good show!

Terrifically detailed illustrations!

I, too, wonder if the GA could provide 'now' photos for any of these buildings?

I'm also wondering if all of those silver pieces had to be removed from the windows every evening? There are two constables in the illustration--perhaps there was a night-watch, as well, to make sure massive theft didn't occur?

A 'mourning house' catalogue would be very interesting to see!
Thank you, as ever.

Brilliant. My family were ironmongers in the High St of Market Harborough for at least 140 years until 1893 . My gr grandfather then emigrated that year to Australia setting up as an ironmonger once again. That business then morphed into the manufacture and retailing of leather goods like gladstone bags, golf bags , luggage , saddles and harness . Today not many people would remember ironmongers or what they were .
