What a fantastic piece of social history! Lovely, moving story showing how the roots of community and family go deep. Am sure I must have bough a Raelbrook's shirt from the Green's family stall!

Great family story and I quite agree with Helen about the community spirit - up with markets, down with shiny new blocks of flats!!

The blog also made me nostalgic for the wonderfully quiet Sundays there used to be in London when all the shops were shut and you could wander the streets alone...

Greetings from Boston,

GA, what a great piece about Robert Green and his family in the trading business of Sclater Street – tradition, tradition. A warm story of family bonds and loyalty too. I agree:

“These days you hear so much about community spirit but they do not know what they are talking about. Having a shiny block of flats is not generating community spirit, it is completely missing the point. What is going on down here in the market and what has happened in the past, that really is a community spirit.”

To which I say “Amen.”
