I would sometimes see Harry in spitalfields & have a chat with him.
He was a lovely man who l recognised from lots of films & tv. Im sad to hear of his passing-l will remember him as a mensch who l loved to see & say hello. Be well-Shalom Harry.

I was watching “Friday Night” last night and was trying to explain to my sister who Mr Morris was played by. I said he was in loads of films, Jewish man, had a really pretty face when he was young, and black curley hair, cockney, like us…Harry something she replied, begins with L, Lewin..Levine..anyway, I searched and it was Landis. Thank you Harry for being one of the first people in years on a British sitcom to make me really laugh, you are amongst the cream of British acting, and your story adds a very touching insight into the poverty and hardship of the East End during WW2.

I’m a South London girl by birth and although my parents moved our family to Surrey over 30 years ago, I’m still a Londoner in my heart. Your story is very touching, I loved the fact that your Mother was such a generous woman, that you had people around you to encourage you to do what you loved but felt sad you missed out on a flat in the former soup kitchen!

Oh Harry Landis. Now if honours meant anything it would be Sir Harry! Not just for those fabulous roles in the 1950’s but for his work in” the Unity Theatre. but not much chance now . Just overheard In the echelons of power “Unity Theatre whats that? He was always true to his principles and a man that I admire.

This was so evocative. My parents met at Unity – Mona Blane (nee Blank) and Ralph Clive. As did my step mother Doris Levenson/Abrahams. I wonder if Harry remembers them.

Thank you – another fascinating article. My memories of the East End is 20 years on.
Arnold Wesker is one of my favourite playwrights of the period. He wrote about the people we were (are!).
At school (Cowper Street) we performed Wesker’s Chicken Soup with Barley. Still the best description of the Battle of Cable Street. I played Dave Simmonds – all fired up and ready to fight in Spain.
