Isabelle Barker’s hat looks as though it could be made of velvet and reminds me of some of the hats designed by Sandra Philips. I’ll take note of the hat on my next visit to Dennis Severs House.

Isobel or Aunt Isobel was my grandmothers cousin and today we have been looking at photos including an 80th birthday portrait!!

Once again the hunt was on for Barkers dairy via google and this popped up! Our grandmother worked at the dairy before marrying.

It is all the more remarkable, as last summer I finally visited Denis Severs house. If only I had noticed the hat.

My mother is 97 next week, her whole family came from Hackney as do my sister and I (we went to school in Spitalfileds). Although we have London accents we certainly don’t have cockney accents. In my experience it’s a fallacy that everyone who comes from the East End speaks like Eliza Dolittle – they don’t!
