They once had a great beigel bakery at the Dalston end of Ridley. They all seemed to have closed down now and you can no longer geta decent beigel. Our local bakery, Shalom of Gants Hill was being forced to shut down. It was the last one out of three in the area. Life is not worth living without a freshly baked beigel just out of the oven. I am not talking about the soggy pre packed bagels of that you buy off the shelf at Tesco. I remember the chicken stall. I used to sell the Socialist Worker at the Dalston end with David Widgery and Sheila Rowbotham and others in the 70’s , every Saturday morning.

I bought bed linen and chair-backs (remember them!) from a stall in Ridley Road ready for my wedding in 59. My mum worked in Taveners Sweet Factory at the end of the market and of course pie and mash in Cooke’s across the road – nice to be reminded of those days.

Ridley Road in the 50s was just wonderful from Monikadams the bakers next to the
Stall where I worked as Saturday girl selling Lockknit
Knickers and Wincette Nighties to the elderly ladies who came
on the day before (Friday) to buy their Chickens from the Chicken lady
Just walking the length of Ridley Road all those years ago
was just delightful
