How utterly fascinating. I never knew that bells needed to be tuned, and I'm suer most people don't know what an incredibly complex art it clearly is. I particularly like his statement that "Certainly, I know the bells at St Magnus the Martyr at the northern end of London Bridge sound at their best if you stand just the other side of the river and I think the same is probably true of the Southwark Cathedral bells if you stand on the north bank. " This man is an artist who lives his craft. Brilliant article!!

What a wonderful talent that Ben possesees . He must have pitch perfect hearing to do this. Its a rare gift . The Whitechapel Bell Foundry was able to use this talent for the benefit of the trade and the public. Now sadly it has closed and it's in the hands of Tower Hamlets council if the foundry will continue and human beings can put the talents that they have to some use. Oh yes , perhaps a machine could do it just as welL. Its up to people to decide if human talent has any future. The murmers of discontent need to grow until Ben can hear a pitch perfect roar of thousands, if not millions of voices, against the devaluation of human crafts and skills be and it should start with a refusal to accept the closure of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry

Absolutely fascinating stuff and I will forward it to lots of other people to try and get more support for the campaign.

And yes - the Jubilee bells did sound lovely on the Thames (although it was frustrating that the wind was coming from the east instead of the usual westerly direction and so we didn't get to hear the bells until they were really close!) But still a spine tingling moment...

Fascinating.
The objection has been lodged and I'll tell people about it.
I've been thinking about why it's important to see old things around us. I think it's something to do with giving us a sense of connectedness and society, and an encouragement to community and care.
