Used to be a stall on Queensbridge road, was it Tubby Isaacs? I come to London every few weeks now. Where are the roadside stalls now? I'd like some jellied eels and pepper!

As an American reader of your blog, I'm fascinated by every post you make about the eel industry in the East End. They always leave me daydreaming about a trip to London just to partake of the eels, pie & mash that sound so exotic from this side of the ocean.

(Although, one assumes I might find a few other things besides eels to interest me while I was there.)

Fascinating! Haven’t had them for years—I was taken to Cooke’s Pie and Mash Shop in Dalston when I was tiny. Used to watch the eels slithering around in their containers. Nice memories of a time gone by. Must have been the early 60s because I had to be lifted up to see the eels!!

I'd like to know - do the heads and guts then go off to be made into cat food or fertilizer or something post consumer use? Seems an awful waste otherwise? Perhaps you could include such details in your reporting.

Many thanks indeed.

Lovely! It's the juice that the eels have been cooked in that is used to make the liquor for pie and mash. Yum!
