A remarkable tribute, telling us something of the people, rather than just listing names and dates.
I appreciate the time and tenacity which must have gone into unearthing this information.
My paternal grandfather served in France, and survived. My maternal grandfather was a conscientious objector; his brother, also a CO, did not survive his punishment and he died in 1916 at a Home Office work camp.

It also struck me how smart all those doorways look - very different from the shabby appearance of many of the houses when I worked in Spitalfields a generation ago.

Here in Sydney Australia I sometimes feel so very far away from my London birthplace. Thank you so very much for the moving tribute to the men who lost their lives in the service of their country.
My grandfather was killed on 8 August 1915 (the same date as Rene Gautier #30 on the list) and his name is also inscribed on the Helles memorial. The photographs of the doors the men walked out of moved me to tears.

I wonder how many of these men who gave up their lives were Spitalfields Nippers. The country turned a blind eye to their desperate circumstances when they were kids but called on them to make the ultimate sacrifice as soon as they were old enough

Sad but interesting article. These young men gave their lives for their country and for what. Those who returned were scared for life and the treatment they received from the government was shocking to say the least. Even today our veterans do not receive the treatment they are entitled to. Cannot imagine been a mother or wife and receiving a letter saying your son/husband has died.

Thank you for your service! God bless them all. Why can't we learn from wars that coexistence is demanded by life for the souls yet to be born.

Thank you GA, Vicky and Adam for such a moving tribute to these remarkable men.
It was particularly touching to see the front doors of some of the homes and to hear about the appalling poverty of their lives before enlisting.
To read that Pilar has finally managed to trace her great-uncle through today's blog was wonderful news, and I sincerely hope that it will help other readers find their ancestors.
Thankfully there has been a recent resurgence of interest in WW1 with many people researching their ancestors who served in that terrible conflict.

"At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them"
