Thank you so much for the story and pictures of the Swan Uppers. I lived in Maidenhead for well over 30 years and often went down to the River to watch the Swan Upping. It was always a wonderful spectacle. For several generations, the Turk family were the Vintners Swan Marker, and these were the ones most familiar to me. They had a boatyard at Cookham and every local person knew the family. Anne Turk I believe was the only lady swan upper at one time; maybe still the only one! I moved away from living within reach of the Thames in February 2000, also having spent the first 11 years of my life growing up in Chelsea. Fortunately I still visit my roots, but love being reminded of so many things which were once such a big part of my life.

I love reading your stories, and finding connections with my mother's family in London( she was a Cockney) . It was a lovely surprise to find your story about Swan Upping, as I grew up in Cookham ( my father's village ) and had close connections with the River. As I now live in Australia, it brought many happy memories, and I thank you sincerely.

Greetings from Boston,

GA, your piece about Swan Upping was terrific! Such a colorful tradition. Great photos of the practice, along with archival footage, really tell a great story.

Thanks for sharing…
