What an amazing story!I always find books about history how women fight for their right but I never heard about Sarah Chapman till I watched the movie Enola Holmes 2 where her name brought and searched google about Sarah’s life.I am amazed and thank you Samanta for sharing us the story. I hope they will make one day a beautiful memorial of Sarah. Bless you!

I was aware of the Matchgirls’ Strike of 1888, but was amazed to read the story of Sarah Chapman.

I discovered this wonderful article while researching into the whereabouts of some ancestors graves which are/were also in City of London Cemetery – also with the surname of Dearman: Arthur George Dearman, his wife Mary Anne know as Polly and their Daughter Olive Mary Dearman.

I’d be fascinated to know if I’m distantly related to this inspirational woman.

I was making a presentation about Suffragettes and knew about the Match girls who were really the beginning of the movement = equal rights and better conditions and later the the vote. When I heard on the BBC News about Sarah’s lost grave this I could not believe – Not making this girl into a national figure or having a monument to her for what she and others acheived for generations to come. So I hope someone sees sense and does right thing and builds a lasting memorial to the great Sarah.

I played Jessie in a school production of The Matchgirls at the Toynbee Theatre in 1970. A story of great hardship and working conditions which are imaginable to today’s standards. It was the start of equality in regards to working conditions for them and for future generations.

Re preserving the grave site. I had a similar problem in a cemetery with a paupers grave & was told-if the grave is less than 100 yrs old, if someone visits & even of there is space for another burial they gave me personally a 50 year extension on the grave site. Good luck with the grave & me memorial. I’ve signed the petition
