What a lovely lady! Great to hear her childhood experiences as a newcomer to the poverty-ridden East End & how safe it was for a young girl to travel alone on a long bus journey to school like that.
Halcyon days of safety with the care of a bus conductor! Happier times, better transport & society.

Lovely entry. Reading about all my old haunts. St Patrick's ,St. Anne's etc. Really captured the area at that time. The old cinema at the end of Brick Lane. I think that's where the hotel is now. All the best to you Cecile.

At one time my best friend at primary school in Hackney was a Jamaican boy who would come to my home after school and we would go to a swimming club run by a branch of the civil service from my dads work. We would travel to the pool on the back of motor bikes from a meeting point . We loved it . One day my dad come to me and told me that they did not want my friend to come any more as they didn't want to share the pool with a black boy. I was terribly troubled and told my dad I didn't know what to tell him as he enjoyed it so much and that I also wouldn't be going again. He said he quite understood and agreed with me. I told my friend that that had stopped the swimming club but he knew and he said " it's because I'm black isn't it" . I denied it .
