Helen in Boston. A ' Pipe' of port varied between 350 and 600 litres depending on the size of the lengthy tube-shaped barrel - but the average of an 18th century 'pipe' of this brandy-fortified essential out of Oporto was about 550 litres - that is about 142 of today's US gallons. Cheers from Geneva!

I think I might balk at a "Dog's Nose" - although this Christmas I could be tempted by what Gladstone maintained was Queen Victoria's favourite tipple - a vintage claret topped up with a good measure of a single malt whiskey.

But of course Gladstone may not have been an entirely reliable witness.

Thanks for the other intriguing temptations in your list.

Ha, next week I have a "merry meeting" at The Hoop & Grapes, Aldgate.

Greetings from Boston,

GA, I enjoyed reviewing those terms relating to holiday brews. Amazing how many containers are included with their varying gallon capacities – barrel 36, but 108,Firkin 9, hogshead 54, and puncheon 72.

A few of the above are mentioned in one of my favorite stories, Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado.” Poe also references a “pipe” as another large container for wine - not sure of its capacity.

Great piece…
