Excellent article and wondrous snaps, interesting comments also.

During trips to Aldgate East in 1977 -78 to find a ship at the Merchant Navy pool, traveling from

Cambridge to Liverpool Street, I was always fascinated by the bomb sites, derelict buildings and

seemingly large spaces between formally terraced houses as I passed Bethnal Green. As late as

the late

seventies! Like the

author, even as a teenager I couldn't grasp why this scene of dilapidation existed and it wasn't

until years later that I realized it was successive governments, though mostly tory, that just

didn't

and still don't give a damn about us working class.

I so enjoyed the article and pictures, very evocative of the 60’s. My dad was a tally man for Wickhams and we lived in Vallance Road, having moved into our modern maisonette from a multiple occupancy house in Grantley Street. I was too young to realise the loss of community, but Hereford Estate had a vibrant Tenants Association that brought families together.
The bulldozed bomb sites made a great playground in the snow of 1963!

These photos brought memories tumbling back. I was at Davenant School in Whitechapel Road in the mid-1950s and remember many of these streets before they were torn down or 'gentrified' We used to go to a tiny sweeetshop in Old Momtague Street at lunchtimes which was run by an elderly Jewish couple who were Holocaust survivors. I regret not asking them about their life before the War, and feel guilty for the occasional 3p chocolate bar I 'removed' when they were not looking. Thanks for the story and the photos and for such a wonderful site.
