Amazing work. Thank you so much for this article and collection of Kurt’s work.
I am Kurt Hutton’s great grandson.
His Son Peter Hutton, my grandpa, changed his surname to Hutten when he emigrated to Australia.
An incredible photographer by his own right.
Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Looking at Kurt Hutton's work - and that of the great Bert Hardy - is a portal into the memory of a country that once existed but is now changed almost beyond recognition. These were the days when summers seemed filled with bright days and warm nights, the smell of candy-floss and the sea at Margate, vistas of rolling green hills disappearing into the infinite distance, the clattering of steam trains on their way to who-knows-where...and the ever present damp air and fog in the heaving city. Chimneys chugging out dark smoke, the clinking of the milkman's crate of bottles, the paper seller's cries of "Star, News and Standard" on every corner. My Mum used to buy Picture Post and I remember spending hours looking at the photographs. They were printed differently than the modern reproductions you see in books. They were Gravure prints, beautiful soft tones of grey with great detail and depth. Not like the darker, contrasty images seen today. Perhaps it was this softness that made them seem romantic to the East-End child I was then. The camera is our time machine and our memory.

Once again The Gentle Author excells in publishing the wonderful work of this forgotten photographer . May it serve as a reminder juxtaposed to the mind numbing photos of the paparazzi who chase the meaningless lives and empty faces of the supposedly rich and famous.

Greetings from Boston,

GA, I really enjoyed those Kurt Hutton photos, plus his inspiring life story. Gracias.

That “Young women on a rollercoaster, Southend Fair, 1938” brings back memories of the old “garter belts” we used to wear with our stockings. Luckily panty hose replaced them in the early 60s as I recall.

Great stuff…

I've loved Hutton's work for as long as I've loved photography. It breaks every perceived rule and says so what? His Wigan series was a powerful social statement, and I have to admit (going back much further than my interest in what cameras did) that 'Southend Fair' had a catastrophic effect on the pubescent Jim.
