There were many damaged people in the East End needing help after the war.
One that I knew of was a middle aged woman who played in the street with the children - her story was :- her boyfriend had visited in the evening and they were sitting on the sofa when a bomb brought down the house, she was trapped under the rubble for many hours with the dead body of her boyfriend beside her. Unfortunately there were no Mary Burds around at that time.

I grew up in Stepney in the sixties and seventies. Our GP, based on the Commercial Road near Watney Market, was a terrifying old Irish man called Dr Leahy. We went to him because he was doctor to the nuns and priests of our parish. I remember him shouting at my sister when her ears got infected from having her ears pierced ('if God had meant you to have holes in your ears you would have been born with them') and then again at the age of 19 when she announced she was marrying a young man from Kerry (a county, in his view, which nothing good came out of). He was a one man band much as Mary Burd has described here. I'm sure he was dedicated to his patients but I suspect that much of his practice and social attitudes were out of date. Mary Burd was clearly an important trailblazer and it is good to have her story recorded here.

This article perfectly explains why 'The Gentle Author' is so needed in 2017

The history, nostalgia and fascinating locations and places that still exist to visit today are one thing, but this article is something different.

To celebrate the various individuals who have committed their lives and professional careers to changing the lives of the most weak and vulnerable individuals in the community is something very special indeed.

Thank you, Gentle Author!

Mary I admire your people who are in tune with our heads. Such devotion they bring back normality to those with shattered hearts as well by providing a lifeline back to normality. *A message for sad hearts, once a heart is broken it cannot be mended, that's it you must live with it. Only half of you is left now your other half is a sky person. The loss of a loved one will never stop being sad. its now time to move on !you must. Get out from your comfy armchair and go out into your brave new world - try it. A practioner can provide counselling along the way. Poet John -PS Its all profound stuff here most people are resilient and bounce back. Get a loving-friend and communicate again 24/7.
