This is very interesting and it is amazing to me that so many of these pumps still survive. It reminds me that we had our own well and pump in the home that I grew up in, no mains water for us way out in the countryside, but the well water was lovely, and it was a sad day when the water board forced us to fill it in, as they did with every other well in our village. You might think that the reason was connected with possible contamination but it was not so, the reason was that they did not want anyone extracting free water !

Does anyone know where the Broad(wick) Street pump has been relocated (if at all) since they did construction? For a while it was obstructed, then hidden, and now I can't find it.

Great article. Love these old pumps!

I walked past several of the Holborn ones many times when working in nearby St Bride Lane without ever really noticing them - an opportunity horribly squandered by someone who professes to appreciate the history of his environments. That's what tax accountancy does to the human soul - I was down there with the lawyers!
