having seen this estate for the first time this year am intrigued by the circular structure within the communial gardens.have been looking at the original plans and details for the estate and they make no reference to the structure.have you have any knowledge of its use or reason to be there would love to know

This reminds me so much of Tower Hamlets in the 70’s and 80’s. The decision makers have no interest in local needs and ride rough shod over the wishes of the people who will have to live with whatever they build. In those days they had what they called ‘planning gain agreements’ which was a sort of corrupt bribery used to let the developers do what they liked. Greed rules and I think you will have a hard fight! Good luck.

I took my classes to swim at Golden Lane pool for several years and we would sometimes stop for a picnic in the summer months. I have always felt that, because of the open, warm areas between the reasonably widely spaced blocks and the fact that they are fairly lowbuildings, I could live happily there.
Golden Lane is so far removed from the hideous concrete blocks of the housing estates in some areas of London with their densely packed, very high buildings that create wind tunnels and perpetual, deep shade. I just can’t uderstand why this redevelopment would be considered appropriate.
Didn’t we begin to remove all the horrible tower block accomodation around the country decades ago? My grandmother spent the last 8 years of her life as a prisoner of one in Leeds, because the lifts were too difficult for her to get into in her wheel chair. To me, they are a man-made hell.

The Golden Lane estate is a great treasure. Planners and designers need to learn from, be informed by, and proceed with care to retain the community assists in the current estate, and they need to work with the community in the redevelopment of the school site. That consultative approach will pay dividends in terms of getting community agreement but also enhance the appropriateness fit of the new into the old. This has been done before and shown dividends.
