My father’s aunt was Mrs Johnson - actually Beatie Johnston. She lived at number 15 at the end and her two sisters Gladys and Nelly lived in 16 and 17. It’s absolutely true that they lost all but 1 of their brothers to the First World War. One died on a munitions ship which blew up at Chatham Docks. The only brother to survive did so because he was too young to go to war… that was my Dad’s father. Mrs Johnston’s husband was called Jim and they had three children, Joyce, Vera and Brian in that house.

We visited Mile End Place today and remarked that the three sisters’ houses not only have the same colour front door and single fence spanning all three front yards but that there are no partitions between them. I wonder if that was anything to do with them?

Great post.
Loved living in Mile End Place. Emily and Ian lived at No19 when I was there. The street was full of characters, a tight little community and our street parties were the stuff of legend!

Fascinating pictures. I knew the owner of the Hair shop at the entrance, on Mile End Road. He told me once that he was offered all the houses in Mile End Place for £18,000 - he declined!

My family and I lived at 2 Ewing street @ 1964-1970. No bathroom and an outside loo. It was a large victorian(?) house. My sister brother and I shared a large bedroom The house was compulsory purchased and knocked down to make a park(?)
We went to Ben Johnson school and a Sunday school.

Just came across this older post in the links from a recent one. Good to know I’m not the only one who likes to pop in this street. I live fairly local (in Stepney Green) and feel like walking under that passage is a little bit like walking through a time machine. The street is seeing elements of modernisation with various developments, but still largely retains it period feel. I love the quick walk up & down it but also feel a bit self conscious about intruding on people’s privacy. Maybe that says something about the essence of the street, or maybe it says more about my insecurities. It was also curious seeing a fairly recent post that identified a very young Eddie Marsan in this very street. I wasn’t aware he was a Stepney Green boy but great to show he went from playing in the East End to acting in Hollywood. That’s probably another thing I love about this street and the East End in general, you can feel the layers of history and stories. So many people have crossed paths through this relatively small geography.
