My ancestor Honor Baldwin nee Herring was transported too in 1826 .She had stolen a desk , the court records show . She was imprisoned in the Middlesex Jail System , then transported She was married to James Baldwin who , unusually , was able to ship as a seaman on his wife's transport , The Sovereign. Their three children accompanied their mother below decks . I have her convict records which are archived in Hobart . She was treated by the ships doctor for a cyst on her breast which expells ' a goodly amount of pus ' . Her child, my gr gr grandmother, was badly scalded and treated by the doctor with turpentine . Honor was given her Ticket of Leave, her freedom , in 1834 and they continued farming at Bothwell in Tasmania for many years . Her daughter, Honoria , married a McRae thus starting a family full of free Scottish immigrants , mainly from the north and west of Scotland . McRaes, Mackays, and Sinclairs are all in my family . The farm was only sold one generation ago but there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of descendants now . Honoria and her husband Duncan McRae from Localsh , had ten children , who all had big families . Our family did well in Australia

The sentence was 7 years but it was very rare for the convict to return at the end of their sentence. One of my ancestors, Emerson Jordan, was transported for 7 years and very unusually his wife and children followed him.

Equality of justice between rich and poor has always been an objective that remains elusive. The crash of 2008 and the activities of certain rapacious businessmen still leaves many wondering when this equality will arrive.

Great blog entry Julian. I didn't expect such an enthralling tale when I logged in this morning; and to learn about such interesting characters too. That has to be worth several re-reads and follow ups (particularly of Anna King), so I look forward to that.

Thanks Julian (and GA too).
