I used to live in Brick Lane around the late 1980s, and, yes, Steve was very generous regarding lock-ins! The Pride of Spitalfields nearby was much the same. Happy days ??

Does anyone know if there are pictures of The Captain Cook of 45 Umberstone Street in London? I know it became a synagogue and was then closed. My 2x Gt Grandfather was the licenced victualler and my Gt grandmother was a barmaid there. I have searched everywhere I can think of to find a photograph, but with no luck x

I remember so many of these pubs. That says a lot about my misspent youth!! It's sad to see that so many of them have been demolished. Change of use to residential or restaurants is not so bad, but to totally destroy those lovely old buildings is terrible.

My great grandmother was the last landlady of the Bank of Friendship which used to be located on the corner of Ely Terrace and Harford Street E1 (number 22) The only picture that I have of it is a rear view in its derelict state in 1947 (London Metropolitan Archives site) before the area was redeveloped into the Ocean Estate. It was a Barclay Perkins Pub and closed in 1940/41 after suffering bomb blast damage. My mother can remember visiting the pub as a child and being allowed to stand on the bar to call time. She also remembers the sound of the church bells on Sunday mornings. That is until they were silenced for the war. I assume that this was a typical 3 storey Victorian (Earliest records date back to 1848) corner pub, a variation on the design of many pictured in this blog. I would dearly love to find a picture of the pub.

My great-great grandparents were landlords / licensed victualler of the Bull's Head at St Katharine's Way (if this is the same one, in the census of 1891 it was 205 Little Thames Street, it was a pub at the St Katharine's Docks with the same name). I am thrilled to see a picture of the pub, thank you!
